FedEx Freight temporarily trimming workers due to weak volumes

By Published: April 13, 2020 11:22 AM CT

FedEx Freight is temporarily furloughing “a small number” of employees because of a decline in volume during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Memphis-based less-than-truckload unit of FedEx Corp. announced the move last week in a memo that said staffing adjustments would be based on business volumes on a location-by-location basis.
FedEx Freight president and chief executive officer John Smith’s memo said managers would be sharing details on “voluntary furlough opportunities” in coming days.
“This COVID-19 pandemic is an unprecedented and unpredictable global event that has disrupted global supply chains and negatively impacted our business,” Smith said.
“If a staffing adjustment is applicable at your location, furlough opportunities will first be administered on a volunteer basis. We will review the number of volunteers to determine if there are additional needs based on projected business volumes,” Smith said.

The company said health benefits coverage would be extended up to four months for furloughed employees, rather than the typical 30 days, and idled workers would maintain eligibility for expanded state and federal unemployment benefits under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act.
A FedEx statement said:
“Due to the economic impact of COVID-19, we are implementing temporary measures to protect the financial stability of the company for the long-term benefit of our workforce, customers and shareholders. This includes the difficult decision to implement a temporary furlough for a small number of team members at FedEx Freight to align our workforce with current operational and business needs.
“To be clear, this is a temporary action that affects a very small percentage of our overall workforce, and we will continue to evaluate the environment and bring back furloughed employees as business circumstances allow.
“Team members affected by this will continue receiving health benefits for four months while also maintaining their eligibility for expanded state and federal unemployment benefits under the CARES Act, if applicable.
“We do not take actions like this lightly, and we are committed to supporting all of our team members who are affected by this and those who are continuing to deliver every day on behalf of our customers and communities around the world.”
Trucking volumes are expected to suffer because of the economy’s slowdown, particularly in the industrial sector, although they’ve been helped by shipments of consumer staples and other commodities.

American Trucking Associations chief executive Chris Spears said on Fox Business last week, “There’s parts of trucking that are doing really well in response to this crisis, but there are many segments of our industry that aren’t, whether you’re in fuel, whether you’re moving heavy manufactured goods like auto parts, even the agriculture industry. We’re all feeling it in different ways.”

Operational Changes & Safety Measures
As we continue to monitor the evolving circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we have been adjusting our operations to support national, state, and local public health guidance. To date, we have taken several measures for your safety and the safety of our associates, including:
Closing stores early at 6:00 p.m. to allow more time for sanitization and restocking
Limiting the number of customers allowed into stores at one time in the U.S. and Canada
Promoting social and physical distancing practices in stores by marking floors and adding signage to help customers and associates maintain safe distances
Eliminating major spring promotions to avoid driving high levels of traffic to stores
Limiting services and installations to those that are essential for maintenance and repair needs in impacted markets
Distributing thermometers to associates in stores and distribution centers and asking them to perform health checks before reporting to work
Asked all support center associates who can work from home to do so while continuing to support our front-line associates

Supporting Our Associates

Our associates are important to your shopping experience. We have implemented the following actions to support them during this crisis:
Added 80 hours of paid time off for all full-time hourly associates and 40 hours of paid time off for part-time hourly associates to be used at their discretion at any time in 2020 and paid out at year-end if not used
For associates who are 65 years of age or older, or determined to be at higher risk by the CDC, added 160 hours of paid time off for full-time hourly associates and 80 hours of paid time off for part-time hourly associates to be used at their discretion at any time in 2020 and paid out at year-end if not used
Providing paid time off for any associate who has contracted COVID-19 until released by a doctor
Providing up to 14 days paid time off for any associate required to be quarantined by a public health authority or the CDC
Providing additional bonuses to hourly associates in stores and distribution centers -- $100 per week for full-time hourly associates and $50 per week for part-time hourly associates
Providing double pay for overtime hours worked by hourly associates
Extended dependent care benefits and waived co-pays

Supporting Communities

We have taken a number of steps to support you and the healthcare workers and first responders providing patient care in the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, including:

Redirected all shipments of N95 masks to be donated to hospitals, healthcare providers and first responders around the country as hospitals made the public aware of shortages
Donating millions of dollars in personal protective equipment (PPE) and other products to hospitals, healthcare providers and first responders
Prioritizing order fulfillment for hospitals, healthcare providers and first responders
Marshalling the resources of our merchandising and supply chain teams to globally source quality products and expedite the availability of needed items
